“veroniche” is an italian term to indicate the sudarium with the imagine leaved by the face of christ. in this case photographs of unknown men and women has been photocopied, enlarged, manually transferred on board and finally painted. the result is a portrait where the subject is deprived of his history and identity. what I tried to point out is an aesthetic and emotional short-circuit consisting in a simple, tautological juxtaposition of a manual intervention on a mechanical trace leaved by the photostatic process to still maintain a direct (as well as dimmly nostalgic) contact with the real existence of these persons.
these portraits are taken from magazines or common photoalbums and belong to murders, victims of murders, friends, familiars, suicides, persons suffering from malformations whose identity and condition are, however, not specified
